CONGRATULATIONS!!
We had two draws during December and we would like to congratulate the winners.
Every product purchase gave purchasers a ballot for a beautiful gift basket valued at over $175. The lucky winner was Wanda Dasset of Waterborough.
Our second draw was for a salon gift certificate, equivalent in value to the gift certificate purchased by the winner. Alfred Hovey of Mill Cove was the lucky recipient of this draw.
Thanks to all who entered and enjoy to the winners!

We’ve taken the plunge…
and we have started a Facebook business page. It’s all new to us, so by taking baby steps, maybe we can try to keep up with technology… somewhat. Obviously, the Facebook page is named ‘ Shear Delight Hair Styling’, so go see what’s happening there.

This month we are posting a Salsa recipe.
This is a sweeter recipe than salsa typically is, but you can add as much or as little ‘heat’ as you want by the amount of cayenne pepper you add. I prefer to omit it completely. Choose your preference and enjoy!
For a single recipe:
12 cups peeled and chopped red tomatoes (parboil to peel)
1-1/2 cups finely chopped celery
2 cups finely chopped onion
between 1/8 and 1/4 cup pickling salt
Soak above overnight. Drain well the following day.
In large pot :
2 cups sugar
1 medium green pepper chopped
1 medium red pepper chopped
1 cup vinegar
2 tsp mustard seed
6oz can tomato paste
*dash of cayenne pepper, if desired
Mix together and add tomato, celery and onion mixture. Boil to desired thickness and bottle.

New Color Extend Sun

Color Extend Sun Solar Screen SPF 12 and After Sun Shampoo
Exposure to UV rays and other environmental aggressors damages hair just as much as it does the skin. It affects both color treated and virgin hair alike causing strands to undergo color fading, moisture loss and cuticle damage. Hair exposed,or going to be exposed,to sun, salt or chlorine requires the utmost care and protection…thus, Redken’s Color Extend Sun line.
The key ingredients are UVA/UVB filters(providing SPF12 protection), mango oil(restoring depleted moisture, preventing dryness) and ceramide (to repair and resurface damaged strands).
How to Use? Use whenever you intend on spending extended periods of time outdoors. Spray Solar Screen generously onto scalp before sun exposure(ideally 30 minutes before). Re-apply as needed, after swimming, washing, towel drying or perspiring heavily. If used on face, spray onto hands and apply to face. After-Sun Shampoo gently cleanses and removes salt, chlorine and minerals and keeps haircoloring looking healthy and vibrant.
Combine with Styling products? Yes. After applying Solar Screen SPF12 you can use styling products, however, it is advised that you wait until the formula has fully dried before applying additional products.
Can I use these products even if I don’t color my hair? Yes. UV rays damage the hair fiber regardless of whether hair is color treated or not.

This winter Redken has outdone themselves with
plenty of new products.
Earlier in the season they introduced us to new volumizing products, including re-formulating their Body Full line of shampoo, conditioner, etc to include ‘Nonstop Volume Complex’. They added new volume styling products including rootful06 (root lifting spray), layer lift07 (length elevating spray-gel) and aerate08 (bodifying cream mousse).

New straightening products were also added. They are designed specifically for fine, medium or coarse hair.
We can help you make the right choice. Sheer straight06 is for fine hair, align12 is for medium hair
and power tame16 is for coarse hair types.

This month Redken has launched the new Curl Collection. This season, curls can be anything from beachy waves to polished ringlets. These products will make it easy for you to perfect your curls. New soft spin05 is curl-enhancing gels for fine hair. New & Improved ringlet07 is curl perfecting lotion for medium hair types. New curl wise14 curl defining cream is for coarse hair. An existing product that is still a favourite is curl force17 texturizing spray gel.

A quote that has become a favourite to me is “Life is not about our agenda. It is about the interruptions.“ I love this quote for so many reasons and it has taught me a great deal.
As I struggle to get to my ‘agenda’ item of updating this web page for February, the above quote came to mind. If you check for January’s update, you’ll see the interruptions really played havoc with my agenda since there was no entry on this page at all in January.
I’m learning (somewhat slowly), to accept the interruptions as important pieces of our lives. If you haven’t thought of them in this way, perhaps the above quote will encourage and enlighten you in the same way it did me the very first time I heard it. The interruptions are most often far more important than our agenda!

We are continuing the Christmas Saving Special this month as described below under November ‘09. The more items you purchase, the more you save.
We are posting a great Christmas recipe we discovered last year that many of you enjoyed. It’s easy to make and like all Christmas treats, ‘calorie free‘???
Fruitcake Squares
Base:
1-1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sifted icing sugar
2/3 cup butter or margarine
Topping:
1 cup coarsely chopped glaced cherries (any color or combination)
1 cup chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds
1/2 cup raisins
3 Tbsp rum or water
1 Tbsp grated orange peel or orange juice
2 eggs
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp flour
3/4 cup corn syrup
2 tsp vanilla
Method:
For base, preheat oven to 350F. Lightly spray or oil bottom and sides of a 9×13-in baking dish. Blend four with icing sugar, add butter until coarse crumbs form. Press over bottome of pan. Bake 20-25 min or until edges are lightly golden.
Meanwhile, prepare cherries and nuts. In a small microwave-safe bowl, stir raisins with rum and orange peel. Cover and microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir and set aside to cool for 5 min. In a large bowl, whisk eggs. Whisk in brown sugar, flour, corn syrup and vanilla. Stir in raisin mixture, including any liquid, then cherries and nuts. Pour over hot baked crust and spread evenly.
Bake in preheated 350F oven until filling is set and edges of base are deep golden, 25-30 min. Cool completely on a rack. Then cut into 2″ squares. Squares will keep well stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 1 month.

OCTOBER ‘09
For many, harvesting is nearing it’s end in October. That may mean pickling season is winding down but one of the magazines in the salon this fall had an easy bread and butter pickle recipe that many of us have enjoyed so we’re sharing. It’s a small batch, incredibly simple and great for first time pickle makers.
Easy Refrigerator Pickles
6 cups thinly sliced cucumbers
2 cups thinly sliced onions
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups cider vinegar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp mustard seed
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp ground tumeric
1/2 tsp ground cloves
Place cucumbers and onions in a large bowl; set aside. Combine remaining ingredients in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook and stir just until the sugar is dissolved. Pour over cucumber mixture; cool. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving. Must be stored in refrigerator. Yields 6 cups.

This month I will be attending the 2nd Annual RENDEZ~VOUS in Wolfville, N.S. After attending this Redken weekend last year, I found it to be one of the better education events, therefore it was an easy decision to register this year.
The theme of the weekend for salon professionals is described as follows:
‘A gathering of like minds to inspire creativity in color, design and business. An event that will empower you and bring you to a new awareness. Come see what’s possible.’
Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? I’ll let you know what’s possible.
